Molecular Techniques for Sex Identification in Birds
نویسندگان
چکیده
In many bird species, males and females cannot be discriminated on the basis of external characteristics. The problems associated with reliable sex identification were overcome by introducing the molecular techniques in the 1990s. These techniques are generally based on DNA hybridization or polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This paper reviews the sexing techniques, highlighting their advantages and drawbacks. To date, the amplification of primers related to the CHD gene is the most rapid, cheap and reliable technique of almost universal application. The description of sexing techniques is accompanied with a short overview of DNA sampling, storage and extraction methods.

The Use of Flow Cytometry for Rapid Identification of Sex in Birds
Unambiguous identification of the sex of live birds is critical in numerous areas of avian research, including studies of alternative reproductive tactics, sexratio manipulation, and conservation biology (e.g. van Rhijn 1973, Snyder and Snyder 1989, Stamps 1990). However, identification of sex can be problematic for researchers dealing with young birds or sexually monomorphic species. Technique...

In many bird species, the sex determination is very difficult in young birds and many adults. Nowadays, sex identification of animals throughout their lives is possible by molecular genetic techniques. In the present study, the sex identification of canaries by PCR methods based on chromo helicase DNA binding protein CHD-Z and CHD-W genes were explained. Genomic DNA was extracted from feather b...
متن کاملMolecular approaches for detection and identification of foodborne pathogens
Foodborne pathogens comprise microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria and parasites that can be transmitted by food and affect public health worldwide. The most common viruses transmitted via food are hepatitis A virus and Norwalk-like caliciviruses. Also, the most common bacteria involved in foodborne illnesses are Campylobacter jejuni, Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella spp, Escherichia...
متن کاملMolecular sexing of threatened Gyps vultures: an important strategy for conservation breeding and ecological studies
During the last two decades populations of three resident species of Gyps vulture have declined dramatically and are now threatened with extinction in South Asia. Sex identification of vultures is of key importance for the purpose of conservation breeding as it is desirable to have an equal sex ratio in these monogamous species which are housed together in large colony aviaries. Because vulture...
متن کاملMolecular detection and characterization of beak and feather disease virus in psittacine birds in Tehran, Iran
Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), a member of genus circovirus, is a small, non-enveloped, single stranded DNA virus. Although BFDVs are among the most well studied circoviruses, there is little to no information about BFDVs in Iran. The aim of the present study was to detect and identify BFDV molecules from the birds referred to the avian clinic of The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Tehr...
